97% of Yushu Ti­betan Au­tonomous Pre­fec­ture’s pop­u­la­tion are Ti­betan who be­lieve in Ti­betan Bud­dhism. Here, there are some 25,000 Bud­dhist monks and nuns, with ap­prox­i­mately 300 in­car­nate la­mas among them. About 3 to 5% of the pop­u­la­tion are monas­tic, with a strik­ingly higher num­ber of them in Nangchen County, where monks and nuns make up be­tween 12% and 20% of the com­mu­nity.
