TUrKey KURBAN BAYRAMI

Known as Eid al-Adha in most Mus­lim coun­tries, Kurban Bayrami com­mem­o­rates Ibrahim’s will­ing­ness to sub­mit to God’s will and sac­ri­fice his son; Al­lah re­wards him by in­stead pro­vid­ing a lamb to slaugh­ter. Turks cel­e­brate by vis­it­ing the mosque for a fes­tive morn­ing prayer on the first day, vis­it­ing rel­a­tives and feast­ing on meat dishes.

It is cus­tom­ary to sac­ri­fice a lamb or a cow and share the meat with rel­a­tives, neigh­bours and the poor.

Schools and pri­vate es­tab­lish­ments close for the en­tire pe­riod of the fes­ti­val start­ing from the eve of the fes­ti­val

(called Arefe).
