2019 marks the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. Temples are decorated with flowers and lights, and devotees read scriptures on the exemplary life of Guru Nanak, attend in-depth lectures and partake in largescale community meals known as langars. On this day, many pilgrimage to the Golden Temple, where religious music and activities continue throughout the day till past midnight. Before this day, a series of ceremonial rituals take place such as the uninterrupted reading of the Guru Granth Sahib for 48 hours.
