2019 marks the 550th birth­day of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. Tem­ples are dec­o­rated with flow­ers and lights, and devo­tees read scrip­tures on the ex­em­plary life of Guru Nanak, at­tend in-depth lec­tures and par­take in largescale com­mu­nity meals known as lan­gars. On this day, many pil­grim­age to the Golden Tem­ple, where re­li­gious mu­sic and ac­tiv­i­ties con­tinue through­out the day till past mid­night. Be­fore this day, a se­ries of cer­e­mo­nial rit­u­als take place such as the un­in­ter­rupted read­ing of the Guru Granth Sahib for 48 hours.
