SIM cards used to be very expensive and difficult to obtain in Myanmar, and MPT, which was government owned, was the only option available in the mobile space. Times have changed since then with foreign companies like Qatarbased Ooredoo and Norway-based Telenor launching their service in 2014. Mytel was the fourth telecom operator in Myanmar and it began its service in June 2016.

Tourist SIMs are available for 15,000 kyat (USD10) one can enjoy 5GB data and 50 minutes of local calls for 14 days. Other packages are also available with the various carriers. For example, a starter pack SIM card with 3GB data and 300 kyat (US20 cents) credit (for calls and messages) can be bought for 1,500 kyat (USD1).

Purchase

Any mobile shop will have the SIM cards. Passports are not required to make a purchase.

Topping up

Prepaid cards can be topped up at most local shops and you can credit 1,000 kyat (US65 cents) to 30,000 kyat (USD20).
