Scales for medicine

Valued in traditional Chinese medicine, pangolin scales are believed to reduce swelling, stimulate lactation and relieve palsy. Pangolins are boiled to remove the scales, which are then dried and roasted. Because of the huge demand, prices of scales have risen from about USD11 per kilo in the 1990s to about USD490 today.
