Javan Rhinoceros

-

Rhinoceros sondaicus Status: Critically Endangered Region: Indonesia Population remaining: 46-66

Also known as Sunda rhinoceros or lesser one-horned rhinoceros, the Javan rhinoceros is the most threatened species of the five extant rhinoceros species. While they used to be found throughout Southeast Asia and northeast India, only about 60 of them live in Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia. The last Javan rhinoceros in Vietnam was poached in 2010 and the species was declared extinct thereafter. Its population decline is attributed mainly to poaching for its parts and now, the biggest threat to its survival is the very small size of the remaining population and its habitat.
