Negros Bleeding Heart
Gallicolumba keayi
Status: Critically Endangered Region: Philippines Population remaining: 50 –249
A vivid red-orange patch of plumage that resembles a wound on the bird’s breast is the reason for its name. This distinctive patch of the Negros bleeding-heart is narrowest among the five bleeding-heart species endemic to the Philippines. This shy bird is found in forests on the islands of Negros and Panay between altitudes of 300 and 1,000 metres. All bleedingheart species favour closed-canopy lowland forest and forage on the forest floor and are particularly hard hit by logging, mining and other activities that encroach into their habitats.
