Bornean Orangutan

-

Deforestation and palm oil production have threatened the survival of the Bornean orangutan ( Pongo pygmaeus), taking away more than half of its habitat in just the past two decades, and wiping out around half of its population in the last 60 years. While about 104,700 individuals swing from the forest trees, the northwest Bornean subspecies is in serious danger. It is estimated that only 1,500 individuals remain, not only due to habitat loss, but also hunting.
