- FOUNDER: ELISABETH MANN-BORGESE

Founded by marine conservationist Prof Elisabeth Mann-borgese, the International Ocean Institute (IOI) is an NGO involved in the promotion of sustainable development, management, and protection of the world’s oceans. She was instrumental in developing the principles that govern the peaceful use of ocean services, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). With a mission of ensuring sustainability and viewing the ocean as a source of life, promoting peace in terms of ocean governance and interlinking it with conservation, the organisation conducts training in order to groom future leaders of ocean governance. Located in Thailand, IOI’S Asian training centre conducts ocean governance, conflict management, and SWOT modules, as well as educates on the management of relations with the ocean in the Southeast Asian region.
