Gulab Jamun
Originating in the Indian subcontinent, gulab jamun has officially been declared Pakistan’s national dessert as of 2019. It is prepared by heating milk over a low flame for a long time, until the water content has evaporated and only milk solids remain. These milk solids, or khoya, are kneaded into a dough with a small amount of flour, and then shaped into small balls which are deepfried in ghee until golden brown. The fried balls are then soaked in a syrup flavoured with cardamom, rose water, kewra (extract from the Pandanus plant), and saffron.
