The Egyp­tians con­sid­ered cowry shells to be mag­i­cal agents and also used them as cur­rency in for­eign ex­change trans­ac­tions. Ar­chae­ol­o­gists have ex­ca­vated mil­lions of them in the tombs of the pharaohs.
