2,000 BCE Invented by the Aztecs, chocolate was created as a celebratory beer-like beverage for the elite using cacao seeds. The Spanish conquistadors who shattered the Aztec empire in the 16th century were smitten with this chocolate beverage and brought cacao back to Europe.
