Lo­cals to con­test Fes­ti­val

Capes surfers have joined a crew of WA tal­ent bound for the east coast to con­test the 2017 Aus­tralian Surf Fes­ti­val.

The surfers — in di­vi­sions in­clud­ing short­board, long­board, log­ger and body­board — are trav­el­ling to the Tweed Coast in north­ern New South Wales as part of the fes­ti­val, which started at the week­end and will run un­til Au­gust 14.

Mar­garet River’s Jerome For­rest and Brad Cowan are in the WA Surf­mas­ters team, com­pet­ing in the open and over-50 le­gends cat­e­gories, re­spec­tively.

Duns­bor­ough’s Jack Med­land is part of the long­board/log­ger team, com­pet­ing in the open and open log­ger cat­e­gories, while Yallingup’s Bob Monkman will chal­lenge in the over-60 dukes and over-65 grand dukes and Brett Mer­i­field will take to the wa­ter in the over-50 le­gends.

Mar­garet River’s Doug Car­ruthers is also tak­ing part in the over-40 log­ger com­pe­ti­tion.

In body­board­ing, ju­nior Mar­garet River pair Max McGre­gor and Holden Ross will chal­lenge in the un­der-14 boys’ cat­e­gory.

Surf­ing WA events man­ager Justin Ma­jeks wished the crew luck and said he was con­fi­dent the team would bring a cou­ple of Aus­tralian ti­tles home.
