Locals to contest Festival
Capes surfers have joined a crew of WA talent bound for the east coast to contest the 2017 Australian Surf Festival.
The surfers — in divisions including shortboard, longboard, logger and bodyboard — are travelling to the Tweed Coast in northern New South Wales as part of the festival, which started at the weekend and will run until August 14.
Margaret River’s Jerome Forrest and Brad Cowan are in the WA Surfmasters team, competing in the open and over-50 legends categories, respectively.
Dunsborough’s Jack Medland is part of the longboard/logger team, competing in the open and open logger categories, while Yallingup’s Bob Monkman will challenge in the over-60 dukes and over-65 grand dukes and Brett Merifield will take to the water in the over-50 legends.
Margaret River’s Doug Carruthers is also taking part in the over-40 logger competition.
In bodyboarding, junior Margaret River pair Max McGregor and Holden Ross will challenge in the under-14 boys’ category.
Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks wished the crew luck and said he was confident the team would bring a couple of Australian titles home.
