Com­pe­ti­tion heats up for chef duo

Vasse Felix chefs Ja­son Ni­cholas and Lara Kirby are heat­ing up their pans ready to cook off against the coun­try’s best chef tal­ent in the na­tional fi­nal of the Nes­tle Golden Chef’s Hat Award in Mel­bourne later this year.

The pair went hat-to-hat with com­peti­tors in the State fi­nal at North Met­ro­pol­i­tan TAFE on Sun­day, June 24, tak­ing home sil­ver medals and se­cur­ing them­selves a spot in the na­tional fi­nal at Fine Food Aus­tralia in Mel­bourne in Septem­ber.

About 26 chefs stepped up to the plate at the WA cook-off on Sun­day, but it was Ni­cholas and Kirby’s two-course menu that im­pressed the judg­ing panel.

Com­pet­ing in his first cook­ing com­pe­ti­tion, Ni­cholas said he en­tered to see how his skills mea­sured up. The pair said they were pleased with their per­for­mance and did not ex­pect the re­sult.

Nes­tle pro­fes­sional ex­ec­u­tive chef Mark Clay­ton said the award sup­ported the pro­fes­sional de­vel­op­ment of young chefs and of­fered a plat­form to ad­vance their culi­nary skills.
