MP worried bushfire facility could end up based in Perth

Augusta Margaret River Times - - News -

Margaret River-based MP Steve Thomas has urged regional local governments to vie for a proposed Bushfire Centre for Excellence.

Dr Thomas previously flagged concerns the headquarters — part of the WA Government’s proposed Rural Fire Division of the Department of Fire and Emergency Ser- vices — could be based in the Perth hills.

“The Labor Party signalled early its original intention to site the project in Darlington in the Shire of Mundaring in Perth, which would have been a massive snub to rural communities,” Dr Thomas said.

“It is critical that local governments in the region take part in the process because if the State Government is left to its own devices we may well see the Bushfire Centre of Excellence put into the metropolitan region.”

The centre and the new divi- sion’s headquarters would probably be co-located.

Next week the Shire of AugustaMargaret River council will also decide on moves to transfer volunteer brigades to DFES control as part of upgrades to bushfire brigades operating as volunteer fire and rescue services.
