Locals dominate at Scarborough
Margaret River surfers dominated the third round of the Rip Curl GromSearch Series, with WA surfers winning five of a possible six divisions at Scarborough Beach on Sunday.
Clean waters and consistent waves met some of Australia’s finest junior surfers, who displayed their full repertoire of skills in front of the judges and an adoring audience as they battled for a place in the national final.
Margaret River’s brother-andsister combo Finn and Lilli Cox showed their prowess by winning their respective 16-and-under divisions.
Finn beat arguably three of the best surfers at the event in Gracetown’s Jed Gradisen, fellow Margaret River surfer Danny Benedetti, and South Australian Harrison Green to claim victory in the boys’ final.
“I’m really stoked to have won and I’m even more excited to have qualified for the GromSearch National Final,” Finn said.
“It has been a great event and thanks to everyone down here supporting us.”
Lilli also came up against some stiff competition in the girls’ final, but was successful against Zali Hewson (Margaret River), Emma Cattlin (Yallingup) and Taiana Duncan (Kalbarri).
“This is definitely my biggest win ever,” Lilli said. “I just want to thank all the girls in the final and all my friends and family for their support.” Joining the Cox siblings from Margaret River was Zali , who won the 14-and-under girls’ final with a score of 10.27 out of 20, beating Lilli.
“I went to last year’s GromSearch National Final and I can’t wait to get back for it again,” Zali said. “It’s so great surfing in a final with some of my best friends in the water with me.”
Willow Hardy (Margaret River) won the 12-and-under girls’ final.
“The waves were really fun out there today and I think this is my favourite trophy ever,” Willow said.
Dawesville’s Macklin Flynn won the 12-and-under boys’ final, a week after placing fifth in Newcastle.
Dylan Vernon (Yallingup) and Lilli (Margaret River) were announced as the Flight Centre rising star recipients while Margaret River duo Finn and Zali were awarded the outstanding performance awards for their amazing surfing throughout the event.
The Rip Curl GromSearch National Final will be held after the final two rounds, with a date and location yet to be decided.
The winners of their respective divisions will represent Australia at the Rip Curl GromSearch International Final.
