Saints win in last-over thriller
The Cowaramup Cricket Club hosted its first home game of the season with the C-grade side taking on Saint Mary’s in a battle to get off the bottom of the ladder.
The Saints batted first on a balmy afternoon, and openers Anthony Balkin (17) and Mark Yardwood (52) made the most of the fastest outfield in the BMRCA, putting on 30 runs in the first three overs.
Saints captain Dean Mistilis (49) then combined with Yardwood for a 67-run partnership, putting the away side in a strong position at 1-100 at drinks.
Cowaramup’s fightback started after drinks when Archer Coates (331) removed the wicketkeeping gloves and marked out his long run, proceeding to take his best figures in senior cricket.
Bob Biddulph (2-15) and Joe Burton (2 for) were also among the wickets, with Saint Mary’s leaving a target of 181 for victory. With eight wickets coming via catches by fieldsmen, the strong emphasis on fielding at Bulls training sessions continues to pay off.
With an A-grade bye this week, Cowaramup’s English import Austin Empson padded up for the C-grade side and showed his class with a wellmade 47. The match was up for grabs right until the last over, with the Bulls innings coming to a close at 8 for 169.
