Busselton’s Ebony Haythornthwaite, a renowned interior designer, is enjoying her role as a colour consultant with the Ventura Homes team. Ebony became known in the design industry in 2015 for her time on the Channel 9 renovation series The Block, which she completed with her brother Luke. The series resulted with the WA duo coming second in the competition. Ebony’s love for interior design and renovating started after she completed her high school education. After working in pharmacy for two years she decided to see where her passion for colour, design and texture could take her, which led to her studying Interior Design & Decoration in Bunbury. In 2011 she was awarded the Interior Design Dux of her graduating year, cementing her belief that interior design was the career path for her. After completing her studies she worked locally in the Busselton area, honing her skills and design knowledge. During her time working in Busselton she had many roles that included interior designer, colour consultant and visual merchandiser. Her passion for design and her thirst for knowledge led her to Perth, where she was employed at a large furniture and design showroom and learnt new design skills. Ebony was able to participate in many styling for re-sale projects, commercial fitouts and large-scale residential projects; each with their own challenges and rewards. “In 2015 the opportunity to be a contestant on The Block arose and my brother Luke and I were jubilant but nervous about the challenge,” Ebony said. Their determination, teamwork and ‘nevergive-up’ attitude was a pivotal aspect of their partnership. During the 12-week project they were able to successfully renovate an entire level of a rundown Melbourne hotel in South Yarra, creating a luxury inner-city apartment with a 360 degree view of Melbourne. Their apartment sold for $2.2 million at auction which was one of the most nailbiting in the show’s history. Completing The Block gave both Ebony and Luke the confidence and opportunity to start their own businesses. Ebony moved to Melbourne for further design experience, before being lured back to picturesque Busselton to launch her own design company The Visionary Co, which has now been running for over a year. Her time in Melbourne furthered her knowledge and passion for design and she was able to create solid relationships with like-minded interior lovers in the industry. Ventura Homes offers all clients a free colour consultation with Ebony. Each client is able to meet with Ebony to talk through their ‘vision’ for their dream home. Together they discuss interior and exterior selections, ensuring that their unique voice and style is captured within the design. “The process of selecting tiles, flooring and cabinetry can be overwhelming for most people,” Ebony said. “The colour consultation is offered to make the pre-start process easy and enjoyable for every client. It’s so rewarding being able to assist in creating a client’s perfect home.”
