Tower gets council nod

A divisive Telstra phone tower in Deepdene was approved by a council majority last week.

Crs Pauline McLeod and Julia Meldrum voted against the item, which followed a debate earlier this month in which residents said the proposed tower would destroy property values and pose health risks.

Councillors visited the site, with Cr Meldrum noting she was “overwhelmed” at the beauty of the proposed location.

The item was deferred amid concerns about the proliferation of phone towers across the LeeuwinNatural is te Ridge.

Telstra consultant Martin Wittek said the tower was part of a State and Federal black spot initiative. He agreed to give $2000 to the Shire for planting native vegetation to help screen the 70m monopole on Latch Road from the Wadandi Track.
