Reminder marries name to town
A recently installed mural in Cowaramup is already garnering attention and becoming a popular backdrop for visitors to the region.
Fremantle artist Brenton See was asked to spruce up the Cowaramup Lions Shed in October.
He told the Times it was a good chance to remind visitors that “Cow Town” was named after the cowara — the purple-crested lorikeet —and not the dairy industry.
“They wanted to jazz it up a little so they got in touch with me,” See said.
His family was already connected to the Cowaramup Lions and the artist said he was happy to help.
“It’s to let people know that it’s not named after cows, but named after the bird,” he said.
The misunderstanding was a common bone of contention for Cowaramup residents.
“It’s good to just let people know that,” See said.
The mural has already featured online and in wedding photography chosen by visitors to the region.
