BRIEF EXPOSURES
Although the Polaroid brand is celebrating 80 years, the companies behind it have changed a number of times since the original folded in 2001. The current owner of the brand – which licenses it out to other companies to use – is PLR IP Holdings LLC and it’s just been sold to a group of Polish investors. What’s interesting here is that one of these businessmen, Wiaczeslaw Smolokowski, also has a majority shareholding in The Impossible Project, the operation set up in The Netherlands to remanufacture classic Polaroid instant print films for legacy cameras such as the SX70. This link could help unlock some of the patents that haven’t been available to The Impossible Project, forcing it to recreate these products entirely from scratch.
