NIKON CONFIRMS FULL-35MM MIRRORLESS SYSTEM… DUE RIGHT NOW!

IT’S vEry lIkEly that by the time this magazine hits the newsstands, Nikon will have taken the wraps off its much-anticipated full-35mm format mirrorless camera system. The company confirmed its existence in mid-July and, since then, has released a number of ‘teaser’ videos which have a revealed a few – but not many – visual details. A launch is slated for late August.

Our summation is that the main model – there’s some conjecture that two will be announced – will be higher-end and essentially more-or-less a mirrorless D850… which means it’s about the same size as the compact D750 D-SLR.

One video reveals an SLR-style body shape with a pronounced EVF housing and a largish handgrip. The lens mount – which is obviously all-new – appears to be a four-claw bayonet fitting incorporating 11 contacts. The current F-mount on Nikon’s D-SLRs is a three-claw bayonet with up to ten contacts. A headline reads, “We are preparing for the next 100 years by leaping into a new dimension”.

Nikon’s initial press statement said, “The mirrorless camera and Nikkor lenses that are in development have enabled the pursuit of a new dimension in optical performance, with the adoption of a new mount. The mirrorless camera is the result of Nikon’s advanced optical and manufacturing capabilities gained through over a century of heritage, as well as superior image processing technology. The expertise built up through the development of Nikon’s digital-SLR cameras has also critically contributed to this development”.

A mount adaptor will be available for fitting F mount D-SLR lenses and Nikon says it remains committed to “…the continued development of Nikon digital-SLR cameras, providing consumers with the choices to enjoy the unique values of either system”.
