PACK LIGHT WITH THE PROFOTO A2

-

THE MOVE TO very compact, batterypowered models with TTL auto flash control has blurred the lines between the traditional flash monobloc and the on-camera speedlight. Swedish company Profoto has pioneered the development of ever smaller flash monoblocs and this continues with the new A2, which is very similar in size to a soft drinks can.

Yet it can output up to 100 joules of flash power and has an LED modelling light. In comparison, Profoto’s A10 on-camera flash unit delivers up to 76 joules. It can also be fitted with a range of light-shaping tools from Profoto’s Clic system, including softboxes, grids and gels. The more extensive OCF system of accessories can be used via an adapter ring. However, the Clic accessories use a magnetic ring for quick and easy fitting and detachment. The A2 can be used handheld, but also the traditional coupling for mounting on a light stand.

Weighing just 773 grams with its battery and the standard adapter fitted, the A2 is 12.6cm in length and has a diameter of 7.9cm. It’s powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack that’s claimed to be good for 400 full-power flashes. The flash power output can be adjusted over 10 stops, and the modelling lamp is dimmable.

With Profoto’s AirX Bluetooth wireless connectivity built-in, the A2 can be remotely controlled via a smartphone or tablet (using the Profoto Control app) and easily integrated into a setup using other Profoto A series or B series lights. Alternatively, you can use the Air Remote TTL controllers that mount on the camera’s hotshoe and can be integrated with the TTL auto flash exposure control systems of Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm and Olympus/ Panasonic cameras.

The Profoto A2 is priced at $1,595. For more information visit www.profoto.com/au.
