Where to stay

-

Mt Eccles National Park has 22 campsites among the trees and adjacent to the lava flows, all about 250m from the crater rim. Some are suitable for small caravans and camper trailers (book at www.parkweb.vic. gov.au). Lake Purrumbete, one of the world’s largest maar volcanoes, is stocked with trophy-sized trout. On the shore is a holiday park with cabins, powered sites and campsites, a boat ramp, and selfcontained cottages (see www.lakepurrumbeteholidaypark.com.au and www. lakepurrumbetecottages.com. au for more information).

Towns where you can stay with volcanoes right outside your door include Camperdown (Mt Leura),

Penshurst (Mt Rouse), Koroit (Tower Hill), Derrinallum (Mt Elephant) and Mt Gambier (Blue Lake, where there is a holiday park within the lakes complex). The lava flow from Mt Rouse enters the ocean at the historic town of Port Fairy and can be seen on the circuit walk at Griffiths Island.
