FOR THE FIRST TIME, kanalaritja: An Unbroken String will offer the public a unique insight into the art of shell stringing – a culturally significant tradition of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.The exhibit brings together rare 19th-century pieces with information about the expansion of the practice by Furneaux Islander women in the 20th century. It is a story of resilience and revitalisation of one of Tasmania’s oldest Aboriginal skills.The exhibit will tour other Australian cities between 2017 and 2019.
