CURL­ING INTO a ball is the main de­fence of the pan­golin ( Phatag­i­nus tri­cus­pis) against preda­tors (pho­tographed here by Tim Flach). Given the strength of its scales, it’s ac­tu­ally fairly ef­fec­tive. Sadly, it’s their scales that hu­man preda­tors want – they’re be­lieved to cure ill­ness by some tra­di­tional heal­ers. These ap­peal­ing crea­tures oc­cur across Asia and Africa (p38).
