Essential highlights

For a creature that’s active mostly after dark, this little lizard – the ocellated velvet gecko – is surprisingly colourful. Found in eastern Queensland and northern NSW, it’s one of just 14 species of velvet gecko, a group found only in Australia. Their toes have remarkable suction capabilities that allow them to adeptly race up vertical surfaces chasing insect prey.
