IN AUGUST 2010, Keighran was part of a combined Australian and Afghan fighting patrol that was ambushed when they pushed into a village in the Tangi Valley in Uruzgan Province. Outnumbered and under heavy fire, Keighran deliberately exposed his position multiple times to Taliban insurgents to establish a forward line of troops and draw fire away from a group of soldiers treating an Australian casualty. His actions meant that the enemy fire was suppressed and the patrol was able to withdraw with no further casualties.
