THE FRANK HURLEY PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS 2020
AMAJOR NEW international photo competition, launching on 1 July 2020, has been named in honour of Australia’s renowned Antarctic photographer Frank Hurley. Australian Geographic is thrilled to be the media partner of this new competition.
FRANK HURLEY
From the bloody carnage of the battlefields of Passchendaele, to the deserts of the Middle East, and from the frozen wastes of Antarctica to the remote valleys of New Guinea, Frank Hurley sought out extraordinary experiences, caught them on film and brought them back for all to see. Hurley’s natural charisma, courage, healthy disregard for authority and technical mastery of his craft made him a classic larrikin, that much-admired Aussie characteristic that still resonates today.
THE AWARDS
Run by the not-for-profit charity Mawson’s Huts Foundation, the Frank Hurley Photography Awards launches on 1 July 2020. It will take place every two years and will raise funds for conservation of the fragile wooden huts at Cape Denison where, in a tiny darkroom, Hurley produced those enduring images from Douglas Mawson’s Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) of 1911–14. Hurley subsequently documented Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic expedition.
DATES
Entries open on 1 July 2020 and close on 30 October 2020. The winners of the five categories will be announced on 2 December in Hobart, the 108th anniversary of Hurley’s departure from Hobart with Mawson’s AAE.
PRIZES
The overall winner will receive an allexpenses paid Antarctic cruise in 2021–22 with Sydney-based Chimu Adventures aboard Ocean Endeavour, valued at up to $15,000. The winners of each of the five categories will receive a high-quality camera. Both the Hurley and Mawson families have endorsed the competition and all finalists will receive a limitededition print from an original Hurley photograph taken at Cape Denison.
CATEGORIES
The five categories include:
• Polar (below 60 degrees south latitude and above 60 degrees north latitude)
• Scenic (such as deserts, mountains, lakes, sunsets and sunrises)
• Nature (flora and fauna anywhere in the world and underwater)
• Portraits of Adventure (taken anywhere in the world but must contain one person)
• Composition (in the tradition of Hurley this category can include multiple exposures, montages and manipulated images).
