Steep yourself in this ancient living landscape
• Day 1: Arrive in Mildura.
• Day 2: Head south from Mildura and spend the day in Hattah-Kulkyne NP. Situated on a floodplain of the Murray River and extending into the dunes of the mallee deserts, this park has a little of everything.
• Day 3: Enter the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area (WHA) and walk along an ancient fossilised watercourse – Willandra Creek – that gave its name to this gigantic lake system. The creek has been dry for 18,000 years. Later, enter Mungo NP – within the WHA – and watch the sun set over the dry bed of Lake Mungo.
• Days 4–5: Lake Mungo has been a living place for Aboriginal people for at least 50,000 years. On a series of walks and drives we investigate this remarkable history as well as the local wildlife, including an amazing number of birds, two species of kangaroo, countless reptiles and a remarkable variety of desert vegetation, from dense mallee woodlands and cypress pine to mulga scrub and saltbush. Climb into the huge Mungo dunefield for stunning views across the desert.
• Day 6: Depart for Mildura and tour’s end.
