REFRESHING RIVER
It was refreshing to read Diana Plater’s article ( Lifeblood of the Nation, AG 160). She had the skill to draft a very interesting and informative story covering her Darling River adventure. Considering the cultural history, operational complexity and commercial interests, she has put together a constructive easy-to-read story.
We are keen to ensure our grandchildren have the benefit of reading of the adventure. The inclusion of the map, the fatal waters explanation and references to Darling River contacts along the way are a very rewarding read.
Maybe it’s not totally practical but I feel the story should be compulsory reading for the younger generation, particularly those future influencers in the area of managing sustainability. The Murray-Darling catchment is one of the most, if not the most, important natural resources in Australia; we have struggled for decades to address sustainability.
The complexity of climate, federal and state government interests, operational accountability and the varied commercial interests have resulted in a tangled and unhelpful situation.
