Middle Of The Road
PROVOGUE / MASCOT
Blues guitarist Eric Gales is celebrated by many other guitarists as being one of the best players alive today. They’re not wrong, and whilst he is surely flattered by the praise, he avoids self-indulgence on his latest album by judicious use of guitar virtuosity, instead allowing the melody lines to capture attention. That tactic should see the guitarist’s career trajectory moving further upwards as a result, and deservedly so. A wide spectrum of guests - including Gary Clark Jr. - and varying instrumentation offers greater dynamics such that when the fiery, expressive guitar solos or deftly arranged rhythmic parts take hold, the album offers a more invigorating listening experience. An uplifting angle via Gales’ vocal delivery means his unique playing style and great tone are also enhanced. A highly recommended artist and album. in a slightly hallucinogenic state.
is this short-lived moment’s carefree soundtrack: a laidback, indie-R&B collection with driving vocals that effortlessly combines vintage vibes and modern production. Light electronics and delightfully strange guitar tones add a quirky edge to the slightly surreal air, ensconcing your ears in a very gentle wall of sound. It’s a subtle, pleasant effect, with little to no sense of urgency - a slow burn that grabs your attention, but doesn’t demand it. But, within the alluring atmosphere are some dark themes that should only be deconstructed after you’ve had some rest.
