Existing in a twilight zone between country, emo and indiepop without ever desperate to appeal to all bases, Pinegrove’s storied third LP was recorded in a sharehouse, sans lofty production setup, by frontman Evan Hall and guitarist Sam Skinner. That understated homeliness glazes the whole affair, guitars naturally reverberated by the snugness of their surroundings and vocals often raw and undercooked, in such a way that it doesn’t distract from the emotive apologue at hand, but rather compliments it. For an album that sees its narrator so achingly reckon with his inner demons, its sonics are decidedly cozy and twee.
