Though only two EPs deep in their tenure, Moaning Lisa have cemented themselves as a driving force in the future of Australian rock. The crunchy, punk-leaning pummels of Yee Ning Chan are searing at their quietest, fierce and forceful vocals from Charlie Versegi driving them like a fox’s teeth into its prey. And while she leans heavily on lashings of reverb and distortion, Chan’s playing is always stunningly tight; the dynamic between her and Hayley Manwaring is especially moving on cuts like “Carrie” and “Comfortable”, where walloping solos fuse with pastoral rhythm work to unravel some truly transcendental soundscapes. There’s no doubt Moaning Lisa will shine with a full album of material to play with.
