The second “spider/ WAVES” kicked in with its gurgling wah lines, our minds were made: Le Butcherettes have done it again. And the rest of the album confirmed our hype; the Mexican mind-melters dole a full slate of twisting guitars across this ferociously rousing 50-minute rollercoaster ride through waves of fuzz and distortion. For the first time in their tenure, too, it’s not just the piercing capriciousness that makes a Le Butcherettes album so indelible – it’s the deep, meticulous songwriting, the piquant chemistry between Teri Gender Bender and the soundscapes she wrangles, and the luscious, layered production that feels more attuned for stadiums than its grunged-up guitar parts would let on.
