Lesson: Oasis - “Some Might Say”

-

Rumours of a big Oasis reunion have been on and off for years. And, though current world events have put a stop to any comeback in the near future, we remain optimistic that the Gallagher brothers will bury their respective hatchets and start playing together again soon. After all, it can only be good for guitar music, right?

This issue we’re looking at one of the band’s biggest and most popular songs appearing on 1995’s (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? In the grand scheme of all guitar music you’d probably be right to say that Noel Gallagher’s playing isn’t that difficult. Still, there is a challenge to get to grips with - and it’s the thorny subject of what guitarists call ‘feel’.

It’s not exactly bluesy; it’s definitely not funky or virtuosic, but there’s a lazy, yet tidy ‘in the pocket’ delivery to Some Might Say. For the bedroom shredders out there it’s often an overlooked skill. Whatever music you’re usually into, this is a great track to jam along to. Just remember - it’s all about feel!

Noel’s sound at the time came courtesy of Marshall JCM900 amps and various Epiphone guitars: Les Paul, Riviera and Sheraton models in particular. Ideally, then, use a Marshall valve amp and a guitar equipped with a bridge position humbucker.

Use an overdrive pedal for a boost in the solo – Noel favoured a classic overdrive choice, the Ibanez Tube Screamer. Almost every digital modeller will include a suitable amp and overdrive patch.
