Westone W-series earphones
Westone has released a range of earphones with removable and replaceable cables. You also have a choice of cables: standard, braided EPIC, or a round MFI cable with a three-button function control and a microphone. You can also choose and change faceplate colour. Available options for all W-Series models include black, blue and red faceplates, but for the Westone W50 and Westone W60, metallic red, gunmetal and gold faceplates are also available.
The W-Series earphone elements are balanced armature types, which Westone says are significantly more compact and efficient than traditional dynamic drivers. Westone indicates how many balanced armature drivers are in each model in the Westone W-Series range, via the model number. ‘ It’s through combining multiple balanced armature drivers with sophisticated crossover networks, that these in-ear headphones are able to provide enhanced audio detail and frequency ranges that extend well beyond your typical in-ear headphones,’ said George Poutakidis of Busisoft, which distributes Westone in Australia. Each of the Westone W-Series in-ear headphones also come with a protective cover for storage and transportation, which Westone calls a ‘Monitor Vault.’ ‘ Monitor Vaults are handy guardians to protect your loved in-ear headphones,’ said Poutakidis. ‘ Made using a high impact polymer, the Monitor Vault is the perfect size for travel and storage and is also weather resistant, while featuring a protective foam interior.’
The Westone W10 ($259) uses a single balanced armature driver. The Westone W20 ($359 uses two balanced armature drivers: one for low frequencies and the other for treble. The Westone W30 ($469) has separate balanced armature drivers for bass, midrange and high frequencies, along with a threeway crossover. The Westone W40 ($599) also uses a three-way crossover, but has four balanced armature drivers. ‘ The W40 delivers such a real listening experience that you will feel like you are at the concert and hearing the sound live,’ Poutakidis told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine. The Westone W50 ($899) uses five balanced armature drivers: one for bass, two for midrange and two for high frequencies. The flagship Westone W60 ($1,199) is a three-way, six driver earphone. W10 through to W40 come standard with a single three-button remote mic cable. The W50 and W60 come with both EPIC braided and three-remote button mic cables.
