The Köln ConCerT

Keith Jarrett (ECM 1064)

Australian HIFI - - SUPER FIDELITY -

Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert is the best-selling solo album in jazz history. Recorded in 1975 in Cologne, with Jarrett playing a baby grand delivered instead of the Bosendorfer 290 Imperial that should have been on the stage for this live performance, the sound was captured by Neumann U-67 valved condenser microphones and a Telefunken M-5 tape machine. It has now been re-released on 180-gram vinyl and more than 40 years later, Jarrett’s exhilarating performance still resonates, not least because this re-master captures both the performer’s bravado and the concert hall’s acoustics with amazing precision and vibrancy. The sharp tonality of the baby grand is rendered as is, and the listener is drawn into the improvisational flows that characterise Jarrett’s style and artistic vision. Each additional listen to this concert will bring a new-found appreciation for its various nuances and innovations. A.A.
