D’AGOSTINO MOMENTUM HD PREAMPLIFIER
D’Agostino has released its Momentum HD preamplifier. ‘ This new Momentum HD is a major upgrade to the Momentum preamplifier,’ said designer Dan D’Agostino. ‘ It adds HD status for the high dynamic and high definition improvements and incorporates substantial advances in the power supply, audio circuitry, and control sections.’ According to D’Agostino, the Momentum HD Preamplifier’s main power transformer is one third larger than the one in the original Momentum preamplifier and uses a winding technology first employed in the Momentum M400 amplifier to deliver higher power output from the same footprint. ‘ Taking advantage of this increased power supply capability, the output stages are now operating at a 36 per cent higher rail voltage,’ D’Agostino told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine. ‘ This increased rail voltage enables greater speed in both macro and micro dynamic contrasts.’
The Momentum HD has a new discrete differential FET input stage which has an input impedance of more than 1MΩ in order to isolate the input stage and thus the entire audio signal path from external variables. ‘ The new input stage was an engineering experiment that exceeded our expectations with the level of fine-grain detail and delicate musical shadings we achieved,’ said D’Agostino. ‘ The subtleties of voices are rendered with a lushness and richness that was simply unattainable previously.’ New on the Momentum HD is a remote control that uses Bluetooth rather than infra-red technology. ‘ The use of Bluetooth extends the range of the remote by a factor of five and eliminates line of sight limitations inherent in infrared remotes,’ says Tony Ingrisano of Advance Audio, which distributes D’Agostino in Australia.
The tone controls and volume control have been re-designed on the HD to increase their range and precision, plus the industrial design has also been updated with D’Agostino’s signature copper elements to better match the industrial design of the Momentum M400 and S250 amplifiers. Available in silver or black, the D’Agostino Momentum HD Preamplifier sells for $69,995. Existing Momentum preamplifier owners, while they have to maintain the same chassis, are able to upgrade their internal circuitry to be the same as the new Momentum HD preamplifier.
