You’ll need: Soft-lead pencil, eraser, string, set square, level, thumb tack, painter’s tape, paint (one shade darker than wall colour and one mid shade)

Draw a rectangle on the wall using the set square and level to ensure corners are square (we made ours 60x120cm).

To create the arch, make a mark for your thumbtack half way across the width of your rectangle, 30cm from the top. Gently push the thumb tack through the string and into the wall so it holds firm.

Attach the other end of the string to the lead end of your pencil and tape in place. (Make sure the length of the string allows the pencil to reach the top of the rectangle and each edge.) Holding the pencil at a right angle to the wall and keeping the string taut, draw the curve by gently moving the pencil in an arc from one edge of the rectangle around to the other.

To create the inner arch, draw a vertical line approx. 10cm inside the left edge of the rectangle. Move thumb tack point across to the right 10cm and repeat the curve to create the inner arch, joining it with the vertical line you’ve just drawn.

Using painter’s tape, mask all straight edges and fill in shapes with desired paint colour, using the darkest colour as the inside arch.
