When you’ve fallen out of love with your furniture, new upholstery can give you fresh perspective. Here, a few insights from Tina Prorellis of Sydney Upholstery, who refurbished the pieces on these pages: Why reupholster? I think it’s sad to see perfectly good pieces of furniture being thrown out. In a world where so many things are disposable, I like to see people being resourceful and creating furniture with character and flair in the process.

What do you love about your work? I adore transforming furniture into timeless pieces and making people feel good about furniture they’ll enjoy for years to come. Advice for choosing a fabric? It can be overwhelming as there is so much choice. Look for fabrics that have been Martindale abrasion tested – a high score indicates excellent durability and therefore suitability for upholstery. Good-quality fabrics don’t have to be expensive – there are great ones for $30-$ 80 per metre.

And then they go right up to $ 500 per metre. For people with children, look for machine-washable fabrics that are durable and affordable. Your favourite fabrics? Velvet, bouclé and linen. They are so versatile and look very good on almost anything.

Of the reupholstered pieces here, which is your favourite? I love everything! But my favourite would be the navy sofa with the white piping. It looks and feels stunning and will last a long time. Sydney Upholstery; sydneyupholstery.com.
