Australian How to Paint

An Indirect Self Portrait

-

Vowing to never stop progressing, this talented young artist is determined to succeed.

Icouldn’t say why I started painting; I’m quite sure I’ve just always had a passion for art. As a kid I loved to draw, all through primary school

I would draw animals and cartoons, through high school my school books were filled and covered with drawings and patterns, and I would also draw on the arms of friends and classmates. I took two art subjects in the last two years of high school and I believe that was when I started to realise this

“hobby” I had was more of a lifelong passion. My teachers were very encouraging; I even had three of them buy some of the work I did in class.

My biggest influence though, I think, would be my father; our house was filled with paintings he did and he would draw me pictures when I was young. I loved it and whether it’s a genetic thing or just a matter of being influenced and inspired, I definitely got it from him.

After school I did a few years at TAFE and finished with a Diploma of Visual Arts at Noosa in 2011. I found that to be a great help to me, especially when it came to colour mixing and also learning to push myself. I had some great teachers who always pushed me to do better.

After studying I began working on my first series “Reality Escapes Her”, hosted my first solo exhibition and entered a few competitions, where I became a finalist for some and received an “Under 25 Award” at Lethbridge Gallery’s 10,000 small scale art award. Lethbridge Gallery is now my representing gallery and has been a dream come true for an emerging artist, helping me to be seen, get commissions and sharing tips that have helped me produce work that is better in quality and also more true to myself as an artist then any of my previous work.

My style of work is realism, and I particularly enjoy portraiture and figurative based works. They often seem to be just images of girls in a nice natural scene, although to me they are much more than that. With any painting, they are indirect self portraits of the artist. They may not all feature my face, but they are me, they are the way I felt at the time, or the way I wanted to feel.

Artists that I find most inspiring at

the moment are people like Jeremy Lipking, Casey Baugh, Jeremy Mann, Henrik Uldalen, Matt Martin, and David Kassan, and there are so many more I could mention.

I’m currently 25 years old, and I hope to never find satisfaction with my own work because I never want to stop progressing, whether that be on a skill level or conceptually.
