PROVISIONA­L CAST-ON: With crochet hook and waste yarn, crochet a chain several sts longer than the required number of sts to be cast on. Fasten off. With knitting needle, pick up and knit the required number of sts in the bumps of the chain, leaving a couple empty chains at either end.

When ready to return to the caston, “unzip” the sts by undoing the fastened-off end of the chain and pull it out, placing the live sts on the knitting needle as you go.

WORKING PATTERN BACK

Work Provisiona­l cast-on as above, use 4mm needles and pick up 64 (70, 76, 80) sts.

Beg with a k (WS) row, Rev Stst even until piece measures 13 (14, 15, 18) cm from beg, end with a WS row.

Shape Armholes

Cast off 5 (5, 6, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st at each end every row 3 times, every other row 2 (2, 3, 3) times. 44 (50, 52, 56) sts.

Rev Stst even until armhole measures 12.5 (14, 15, 16.5)cm, end with a WS row.

Shape Shoulders

Cast off 5 (6, 6, 7) sts at beg of next 4 rows; leave rem 24 (26, 28, 28) sts on holder.

LEFT FRONT

Work Provisiona­l cast-on as above, use 4mm needles and pick up 22 (25, 28, 30) sts.

Row 1: WS – K4 (5, 5, 6), turn.

Row 2: Sl 1, p to end of row.

Row 3: K8 (10, 10, 12), turn.

Rows 4, 6 & 8: Sl 1, p to last st,

MAKING UP

Sew fronts to back at shoulders.

ARMHOLE EDGING

With 3.75mm needles and RS facing, pick up and k70 (74, 78, 82) sts around armhole opening.

Row 1: WS – P2, *k2, p2; rep from * to end.

Row 2: K2, *p2, k2; rep from

* to end.

Rep rows 1 and 2 once more for k2, p2 rib.

Cast off loosely in rib.

Sew side and armhole edging seams. Work 2nd armhole edging to match.

BOTTOM EDGING

Un-do Provisiona­l Cast-on of fronts and back and place all resulting sts on smaller straight needle with RS facing. 108 (120, 132, 140) sts.

Row 1: RS - Work row 2 of k2, p2 rib as given for armhole edging and AT SAME TIME dec 1 st at each side seam. 106 (118, 130, 138) sts.

Rib even for further 5 rows, end with a WS row.

Cast off loosely in rib.

COLLAR

With circular needle and WS facing, starting at beg of left front neck shaping, pick up and k32 (35, 38, 41) sts to shoulder, k back neck holder sts, pick up and k32 (35, 38, 41) sts to start of right front neck shaping. 88 (96, 104, 110) sts. Do not join, work back and forth in rows.

Row 1: K to last 3 sts, turn.

Row 2: Sl 1, p to last 3 sts, turn.

Row 3: Sl 1, k to last 6 sts, turn.

Row 4: Sl 1, p to last 6 sts, turn. Cont as now est, working 3 less sts each row until 28 (30, 32, 32) sts rem unworked.

Next Row: Work across all sts.

Break yarn, leaving sts on spare needle for edging.

FRONT/COLLAR EDGING

With circular needle and RS facing, starting at bottom edge of right front, pick up and k17 sts along shaped edge of right front, pick up and k22 (26, 30, 35) sts up right center front edge to collar, k88 (96, 104, 110) sts of collar on spare needle, pick up and k22 (26, 30, 35) sts down left center front edge to shaping, pick up and k17 sts to bottom edge of left front. 166 (182, 198, 214) sts. Do not join, work back and forth in rows.

Starting with a WS row, work 2 rows in k2, p2 rib as given for armhole edging.

Next Row: buttonhole row WS – Rib 21 (21, 22, 22) sts, yo, rib 2 tog, rib 10 (14, 16, 21) sts, yo, rib 2 tog, rib to end of row.

Work a further 3 rows in rib, end with a RS row.

Cast off loosely in rib.

Sew buttons to right front edging opposite buttonhole­s.
