GETTING STARTED

Knitting on Circular Needles

When knitting dress on a circ needle, you have only the shoulder seams to sew together. To knit st.st on a circ needle only make knit sts (NO PURL sts) as you always knit in the same direction, like a spiral. This makes knit easy and quick and the garment ready to wear as soon the loose ends have been fastened. Knit dress, on circ needle up to armhole, then cont on straight needles.

Choose the Right Size

If the child is in between two measurements, I would advise you to choose the size up.

Correct Length for Garment

To shorten or lengthen pinafore always do this before starting on rib for bodice.

MOSS ST

Row 1: ** K1, K1, rep from ** until end of row

Row 2: ** K1, K1, rep from ** until end of row so K st goes over P st and P st goes over K st.

These 2 rows form pattern and are rep.

WORKING PATTERN

FRONT and BACK knitted in one piece With Mc cast on loosely

193(207, 223, 237) sts onto size 4mm circ needle (60 cm).

Close the loop to start knitting in the round, which means that the beg and end of row is where first and last sts meet. Make sure that all sts are hanging down in the same direction, so edge is not twisted

Work 3 cm moss.st.

Change to st.st NOTE! St.st is only K sts on circ needle and dec1 in beg of 1st row for size 1, 3. After 2 rows st.st make 2 stripes as follows, starting from beg of row: 3 rows Cc1, 2 rows Mc, 3 rows Cc2.

Cont to work with Mc.

When skirt measures 25(27, 30, 33cm) dec 64(69, 74, 79) sts for bodice as follows, starting from beg of row: *K1, K 2 tog, rep from* until end of row, so there are 128(138, 148, 158) sts left on needle.

Change to size 3mm circ needle (40 cm) and single rib. When rib measures 11(12, 13, 13)cm dec for armholes as follows, starting from beg of row: Cast off 5(6, 7, 7)sts,

Rib 54(57, 60, 65)sts,

Cast off 10(12, 14, 14)sts,

Rib 54(57, 60, 65)sts,

Cast off 5(6, 7, 7)sts.

Now work BACK and FRONT separately.

BACK

Put first 54(57, 60, 65) sts onto size 3mm straight needles. Work 1 row rib, then on RS dec1, one st in from armhole on either side, every other row 3 times (= 48, 51, 54, 59 sts left). When armhole measures 3 cm cast off the middle 20(23, 26, 29) sts, so you end up with 14(14, 14, 15) sts on either side of neck. Knit each side separately. Start with Left side.

Put Right side sts onto stitch holder.

BACK, LEFT SIDE

Cont with rib and dec1, one st in from neckline, every other row 3 times (= 11, 11, 11, 12 sts left).

When armhole measures 10(11, 11, 12) cm cast off.

BACK, RIGHT SIDE

Put Right side sts onto size 3mm straight needles. Knit as Left side, reverse shaping.

FRONT

Put remaining 54(57, 60, 65) sts onto size 3mm straight needles and knit as BACK.

MAKING UP

Shoulders

Fasten all loose ends. Steam, do not press, lightly over skirt with iron. Using yarn sew shoulder seams together from RS, in back loops of cast off sts, with an overcast stitch (similar to hemming stitch). This makes a decorative and smooth seam.

Using a size 3mm crochet hook crochet a cord of chain stitch about 80, 100 cm long, with either two strands of Mc for a plain cord or one strand each of Cc1 and Cc2 for a multi coloured cord. Thread cord through skirt between rib and st.st at waistline.
