SPECIAL ABBREVIATI­ONS

M1L – make 1 st left - pick up running thread from front to back, k it through the back loop);

M1R – make 1 st right - pick up running thread from back to front, k it through the front loop); ssk - slip next 2 sts knitwise, one at a time to righthand needle, then insert tip of left hand needle into fronts of these stitches from left to right and knit them together to decrease 1 stitch;

TENSION

28 sts by 36 rows over Stst on 3.25mm needles to 10cm

Stitch Pattern

K1/P1 Rib (even number of sts) Rows 1 & 2: *K1, p1; rep from * to end.

Rep Rows 1-2 for pattern.

K1/P1 Rib (odd number of sts) Row 1: RS – K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end.

Row 2: WS – P1, *k1, p1; rep from * to end.

WORKING PATTERN BACK

With 2.75mm straight needles, cast on 112 (127, 142, 157, 172, 187) sts. K1/P1 Rib for 1.5cm, end with a RS row.

Change to 3.25mm straight needles. Next Row: WS – P.

Next Row: RS – Beg Chart – Work

Row 1 of Chart to end, working marked repeat 7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12) times.

Cont in Chart patt until Rows 1-12 have been worked 7 times. Piece measures approx 25cm from beg. Next Row: RS – K, dec 14 (15, 14, 15, 14, 15) sts evenly spaced. 98 (112, 128, 142, 158, 172) sts. Change to 2.75mm straight needles. K1/P1 Rib for 2cm, end with a WS row.

Change to 3.25mm straight needles. Next Row: RS – K48 (55, 63, 70, 78, 85), p2, k48 (55, 63, 70, 78, 85).

Next Row: WS – P.

Next Row: Inc Row – RS – K2, M1R, work as est to last 2 sts, M1L, k2.

Shape Armholes

Cast off 7 (9, 11, 12, 14, 16) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then cast off 0

(0, 0, 2, 2, 2) sts at beg of next 0 (0, 0, 2, 2, 2) rows. 98 (108, 120, 128, 140, 150) sts.

Next Row: Dec Row – RS – K1, ssk, work as est to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Rep Dec Row every other row 5 (8, 10, 10, 12, 13) more times, then every 4 rows 0 (0, 1, 2, 2, 2) times. 86 (90, 96, 102, 110, 118) sts.

Cont even as establishe­d until armhole measures 18 (18.5, 19.5, 21, 22, 23.5) cm, end with a WS row.

Cast off all sts, and place a removable marker 12 (14, 16, 18, 21, 24) sts in from each shoulder edge to mark shoulder sts.

FRONT

Work as for Back until armholes measures 10 (11, 12, 12, 13.5, 14.5) cm from beg, end with a WS row.

Shape Neck

Next Row: RS – K29 (31, 33, 36,

39, 42), join new yarn and cast off center 28 (28, 30, 30, 32, 34) sts, k to end. 29 (31, 33, 36, 39, 42) sts each side.

Work both sides at once from separate balls from this point forward.

Cast off from each neck edge 4 sts once, then 2 sts 4 times, then dec 1 st at each neck edge on next RS row and every other row 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5) more times. 12 (14, 16, 18, 21, 24) sts rem

each side when all shaping is complete. Work both sides even until armholes meas same as Back, end with a WS row. Cast off rem sts each side.

SLEEVES

Lower Sections (make 2)

With 2.75mm straight needles, cast on 37 (37, 39, 41, 52, 52) sts.

K1/P1 Rib for 1.5cm, end with a RS row.

Change to 3.25mm straight needles. Next Row: WS – P.

Design Note: to create a neater edge for the sides, slip the last st of each row with the yarn at the WS of the work throughout the next section.

Next Row: RS – Beg Chart – K0 (0, 1, 2, 0, 0), work Row 1 of Chart to last 0 (0, 1, 2, 0, 0) sts, working marked repeat 2 (2, 2, 2, 3, 3) times, end k0 (0, 1, 2, 0, 0).

Cont in Chart patt through Row 12 (keeping side sts in Stst for 3rd and 4th sizes). Piece measures approx 4.5cm from beg.

Set aside and make 2nd Lower Section.

Join Lower Sections

With 2.75mm straight needles, K1/P1 Rib across 37 (37, 39, 41, 52, 52) sts of first Lower Section, then with same ball of yarn cont in K1/P1 Rib across 37 (37, 39, 41, 52, 52) sts of second Lower Section. 74 (74, 78, 82, 104, 104) sts.

Cont in rib as establishe­d for 2cm, end with a WS row.

Change to 3.25mm straight needles.

Next Row: WS – P, inc 0 (0, 0, 6, 0, 0) sts evenly spaced. 74 (74, 78, 88, 104, 104) sts.

Next Row: RS – K36 (36, 38, 43,

51, 51), p2, k36 (36, 38, 43, 51, 51).

Next Row: WS – P.

Shape Cap

Cast off 7 (9, 11, 12, 14, 16) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then cast off 0 (0, 0, 2, 2, 2) sts at beg of next 0 (0, 0, 2, 2, 2) rows. 72 (72, 74, 76, 80, 84) sts. Next Row: Dec Row – RS – K1, ssk, work as est to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Rep Dec Row every other row 17 (7, 9, 8, 9, 9) more times, then every 4 rows 0 (2, 2, 3, 3, 4) times, then every other row 0 (7, 7, 7, 7, 7) times. 36 (38, 36, 38, 40, 42) sts. Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 6 (6, 4, 4, 4, 4) rows, then 3 sts at beg of foll 2 rows. 18 (20, 22, 24, 26, 28) sts. Cast off rem sts.

MAKING UP

Block pieces to measuremen­ts. Sew Left shoulder seam.

COWL

With 3.25mm circ, RS facing and beg at Back neck edge, pick up and k 62 (62, 64, 66, 68, 70) sts evenly along Back neck edge between markers, and 80 (80, 82, 84, 86, 88) sts evenly along Front neck edge. 142 (142, 146, 150, 154, 158) sts.

Do not join; work back and forth in rows.

Next Row: WS – P.

Stst even until cowl measures 12.5cm, end with a WS row.

Change to 2.75mm circ and K1/P1

Rib for 4 rows.

Cast off all sts loosely in rib.

Sew side and sleeve seams. Leave sleeve open at front between Lower Sections.

Set in sleeves.
