• pair of handles 22.5cm wide, with

opening 19.5cm wide

NEEDLES AND TOOLS

• 3.50mm crochet hook • wool sewing needle

MEASUREMEN­TS

23cm wide x 19cm deep excluding handles

SPECIAL ABBREVIATI­ONS

Popcorn = 5tr in next st, draw up lp and remove hook, insert hook from back to front into first of these tr and draw lp through (reducing lp to working height), work 1ch to fasten.

TENSION

7 patts to 9cm wide by 13 rows over popcorn patt, using 3.50mm hook to 10cm

WORKING PATTERN SIDES OF BAG (MAKE 2 ALIKE)

Using 3.50mm hook, loosely make 38ch.

Row 1: Miss 1ch, 1dc in each ch to end. 37dc.

Row 2: (1dc, 1ch) in first dc, * Popcorn in next dc, 1tr in next dc, rep from * to end.

3rd row – 1ch, 1dc in first tr, * 1dc in top of Popcorn, 1dc in next tr, rep from * to end, working last dc in turning ch.

Last 2 rows form patt.

Cont in patt until work measures approx 14cm from beg.

Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to indicate end of side seams.

Cont in patt until work measures approx 19cm from beg, ending with a 3rd patt row.

Shape for Handles

Next Row: Sl st across first 2 sts, (1dc, 1ch) in next dc, Popcorn in next dc, patt to last 2 sts, turn.

Next Row: 1ch, 1dc in first tr, 1dc in top of Popcorn, patt to last 2 sts, 1dc in Popcorn, 1dc in turning ch.

Work 5 rows dc for handle flap.

Fasten off.

MAKING UP

If desired, block sides to shape as folls

– wet fabric (gently squeezing out excess water), pin each side to shape, then leave until completely dry.

Using a flat seam, join base seam and side seams to coloured threads. Insert handle flaps through opening at base of handles and stitch securely in place on wrong side.
