TENSION

22 sts by 30 rows over Stst on 4mm needles to 10cm.

GETTING STARTED COLOUR & PATTERN SEQUENCE FOR SLEEVES & HAT

Row 1: RS – Using B, knit.

Row 2: B, purl.

Rep rows 1 & 2 three times more.

Row 9: RS – Using MC, knit.

Row 10: MC, knit.

Using A, rep rows 1 & 2 four times.

Row 19: RS – Using MC, knit.

Row 20: MC, knit.

Rep these 20 rows throughout.

WORKING PATTERN SWEATER BACK

With 3.25mm needles and B, cast on 47 (53, 59, 65, 71) sts.

K1, p1 rib for 3 (3, 4, 4, 4) cm, end with a WS row.

Change to 4mm needles.

Using MC, Stst until work measures 23 (25, 27, 29, 34) cm from beg, end with a WS row.

Cast off 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) beg next 2 rows for shoulders.

Leave rem 17 (19, 21, 23, 25) sts on holder for centre back neck.

FRONT

Work as for back until front measures 14 (15, 15, 17, 20) cm from beg, end with a WS row.

Split Front

Next Row: RS – K21 (24, 27, 30,

33) sts, turn, on these sts only.

Cont in Stst until front measures 4 (4, 5, 5, 5) cm less than back to shoulder, end with a RS row.

Shape Neck

Next Row: WS – Cast off 3 (4, 4, 5, 6) sts, p to end.

Dec 1 st at neck edge next row, then every other row 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) times. 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) sts.

Cont straight until front measures same as back to shoulder, end with a WS row.

Cast off rem 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) sts. With RS facing, return to rem sts, rejoin yarn, cast off next 5 sts for centre front, k to end. 21 (24, 27, 30, 33) sts.

Cont in Stst until front measures 4 (4, 5, 5, 5) cm less than back to shoulder, end with a WS row.

Shape Neck

Next Row: RS – Cast off 3 (4, 4, 5, 6) sts, k to end.

Dec 1 st at neck edge next row, then every other row 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) times. 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) sts.

Cont straight until front meas same as back to shoulder, end with a RS row. Cast off rem 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) sts.

SLEEVES

With 3.25mm needles and MC, cast on 31 (33, 35, 37, 39) sts.

K1, p1 rib for 3 (3, 4, 4, 4) cm, end with a RS row.

Next Row: WS – Rib 3 (4, 5, 3, 4) sts, M1; (rib 5 (5, 5, 6, 6) sts, M1) 5 times; rib 3 (4, 5, 4, 5) sts. 37 (39, 41, 43, 45) sts.

Change to 4mm needles.

Work in Colour & Pattern Sequence as given above and at the same time, inc 1 st each end every 6 (5, 6, 6, 6) rows 4 (5, 5, 6, 7) times. 45 (49, 51, 55, 59) sts.

Patt straight until piece measures 13.5 (15, 17, 19, 20.5) cm from beg, end with a WS row.

Cast off loosely.

MAKING UP

Block pieces to measuremen­ts. Use mattress st to sew all seams. Join shoulder seams.

NECKBAND

With RS facing and 3.25mm circular needle and MC, pick up and k 15 (16, 19, 21, 22) sts up right front shaped neck edge, k back neck 17 (19, 21, 23, 25) sts and dec 1 st at centre, pick up and k 15 (16, 19, 21, 22) sts down left front shaped neck edge. 47 (51, 59, 63, 69) sts.

Work back and forth in rows, k1, p1 rib for 7 (7, 7, 9, 9) rows.

Cast off loosely in rib.

BUTTONBAND

With RSF and 3.25mm needles, pick up and k22 (25, 28, 32, 36) sts along left front neck edge for girls or right edge for boys (incl neckband). K1, p1 rib for 8 rows.

C OFF loosely in rib.

Place 3 (3, 3, 3, 4) button markers along buttonband, the top one at centre of neckband, the last one 2-2.5cm from beg of split and rem button(s) evenly in between.

BUTTONHOLE BAND

With RSF and 3.25mm needles, pick up and k22 (25, 28, 32, 36) sts along right front neck edge for girls or left edge for boys (incl neckband).

K1, p1 rib 3 rows.

Buttonhole Row: RS – Rib to marker, yo, skp; *rib to next marker, yo, skp; rep from * 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) times more; rib to end. Rib 4 more rows.

Cast Off loosely in rib.

Place marker 11.5 (12, 13, 13.5, 14.5) cm down from shoulder on front and back; sew sleeves between markers.

Join side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons.

HAT

With 3.25mm needles and MC, cast on 71 (75, 81, 89, 95) sts.

Stst for 6 (6, 8, 8, 8) rows and inc 4 sts evenly across last row. 75 (79, 85, 93, 99) sts.

Change to 4mm needles.

K1, p1 rib for 4 (4, 6, 6, 6) rows. Work in Colour & Pattern Sequence as given above until hat measures 10 (12, 14, 14, 16) cm from beg of rib, end with a WS row.

Shape Top

Keeping Colour & Pattern Sequence correct throughout, dec for top as following:

Next Row: RS – Patt 5 (5, 5, 7, 7) sts, skp, k1, k2tog; (patt 7 (8, 9, 10, 11) sts, skp, k1, k2tog) 5 times; patt 5 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts. 63 (67, 73, 81, 87) sts. Patt 1 row.

Next Row: RS – Patt 4 (4, 4, 6, 6) sts, skp, k1, k2tog; (patt 5 (6, 7, 8, 9)

Break yarn, leaving longer end. Thread yarn through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off.

Join back seam, reversing seam for rolled edge.
