SPECIAL ABBREVIATI­ONS

W&T – (wrap and turn, used for short rows) work to specified point, transfer next st to RH needle, wrap yarn around it, transfer it back to LH needle, bring yarn back to working position and turn work, ready to go back in the opposite direction (when working the wrapped st on next row, insert RH needle under the wrap and work it tog with the correspond­ing st on needle;

GETTING STARTED

3-needle cast-off: With the right side of the two pieces facing each other, and the needles parallel, insert a third needle knitwise into the first stitch of each needle. Wrap the yarn around the needle as if to knit; knit these two stitches together and slip them off the needles. *Knit the next two stitches together in the same way; slip the first stitch on the third needle over the second stitch and off the needle. Repeat from * across row until all the stitches are cast off.

WORKING PATTERN

Note: Cardigan is constructe­d by first working the left centre front edge around to centre back, then working from right centre front edge with shaping in reverse. Then, the 2 pieces are joined using 3-needle cast-off method at the centre back.

LEFT FRONT/HALF BACK

Beg at centre left front edge, cast on 48 sts.

Row 1: RS - K3, *p2, k3; rep from

* to end.

Row 2: P3, *k2, p3; rep from * to end. Rib 2 more rows.

Inc row 1: RS - Rib to last 3 sts, M1k, k3.

Row 2: P4, rib to end.

Inc row 3: Rep inc row 1.

Row 4: P5, rib to end.

Row 5: Rep inc row 1.

Row 6: P6, rib to end.

Inc row 7: Rib to the last 3 sts,

M1p, k3.

Row 8: P3, k1, rib to end.

Row 9: Rep inc row 7 – there are 5

Row 2: WS - Cast on 5 sts, p3, * k2, p3; rep from * to end.

Rep last 2 rows 3 (4, 5) times more. 98 (103, 108) sts.

Shape Shoulder

Rows 1 & 2: Work even.

Dec row 3: RS - Rib to last 5 sts, p2tog, k3.

Row 4: P3, k1 rib to end.

Rep last 4 rows 4 (5, 6) times more. 93 (97, 101) sts.

Inc row: RS - [K1, kfb, k1, p2] 9 (10, 11) times, rib to end. 102 (107, 112) sts. Note that the first 9 (10, 11) k3 rib (on the lower front) have been inc’d to k4 ribs with the rem rib in establishe­d k3, p2 rib.

Complete Armhole

Next row: WS - Cast off 38 sts, rib to end.

Row 2: RS - Work even in establishe­d rib.

Row 3: WS - Cast off 3 sts, rib to end.

Rep last 2 rows 1 (2, 3) times more. 58 (60, 62) sts.

Work even for 4 (6, 8) rows.

Short row Shaping

Short row 1: RS - Work to last 8 sts, W&T; rib to end.

Short row 2: RS - Work to 6 sts before previous wrapped st, W&T; work to end.

Short rows 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9: Rep short row 2.

Next row: RS - Work to end of row, closing up the wraps.

Work 2 (4, 6) rows even.

Back Armhole

Next Row: WS - Cast on 3 sts, rib to end.

Next Row: Work even.

Rep the last 2 rows 1 (2, 3) times more.

Next Row: WS - Cast on 38 sts, then work in rib as on front armhole at shoulder. 102 (107, 112) sts.

Work even for 4 rows.

Shape Shoulder

Inc row: RS - Work to the last 4 sts, M1 st in patt, k1, k3.

Rep inc row every 4th row 4 (5, 6) times more. 107 (113, 119) sts. When shoulder measures 7.5 (9.5, 11) cm or same number of rows as the front shoulder, work as foll:

Shape Neck

Next Row: WS - Cast off 2 sts, work to end. Work 1 row even.

Rep last 2 rows once more. 103 (109, 115) sts. Work even for 13 (16, 19) rows more. Leave sts on hold for finishing later.

RIGHT FRONT/HALF BACK

Work as for Left Front/Half Back only reverse the shaping (from end of RS rows to beg of RS rows and from WS to RS or RS to WS in all the other shaping steps).

Then using the 3-needle cast-off method, join the 2 pieces at center back from the WS.

SLEEVES

Cast on 66 (70, 78) sts.

Row 1: RS - P2, *k2, p2; rep from * to end.

K2, p2 rib for 3 rows more.

Inc row: RS - P2, [kfb, k1, p2] 16 (17, 19) times. 82 (87, 97) sts.

Work in k3, p2 rib for 5 more rows. Shape Cap

Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 18 (20, 24) rows.

Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 6 rows. Cast off 22 (23, 25) sts.

MAKING UP

Set in sleeves. Sew sleeve seams. Block finished cardigan very lightly, being careful not to flatten rib.

COLLAR

From RS, pick up and k 128 (132,

140) sts from the first neck marker to the opposite marker around neck edge. Row 1: WS - P3, *k2, p2; rep from * end last rep p3 instead of p2.

Rib as establishe­d for 10cm. Cast off in rib.

Try on cardigan and sew 2 snaps to the WS of the right front and 2 closures to left front (in a slant) to close the front. Sew on one more snap to close the opposite side.

DRAPED SKIRT GETTING STARTED MAIN SKIRT PATTERN

Over an odd number of sts, plus 2 selvage sts.

Row 1: RS - K1, p1, *sl 1 st wyif, p1; rep from *, end sl 1 st wyib.

Row 2: P1, *p1, k1; rep from *, end p1, sl 1 st wyif.

Row 3: K to the last st, sl 1 st wyib.

Row 4: P to the last st, sl 1 wyif.

Rep these 4 rows For Main Skirt Pattern.

Note: A-Line Skirt with short-row draped front with fabric tabs that close up the slit details. To make a plain skirt minus the tabs, make front same as back.

WORKING PATTERN BACK

With 4.5mm needles, cast on 119 (125, 131, 137) sts.

Work in Main Skirt patt for 11cm or 38 rows.

**Dec row 1: RS - Work 24 sts, pm, skp, k to the last 26 sts, k2tog, pm, k to the last st, sl 1.

Dec row 2: WS - P to marker, sl marker, p2tog, p to 2 sts before 2nd marker, p2tog-tbl, p to the last st, sl 1 wyif – 4 sts dec’d.

Work 26 rows even**.

Rep from ** to ** twice more.

Then rep dec rows 1 & 2. 103 (109, 115, 121) sts.

Remove markers and work even until piece meas 43cm from beg, end with patt row 2.

Dart dec row 1: RS - K17 (19, 21, 23), pm, skp, k65 (67, 69, 71), k2tog, pm, k16 (18, 20, 22) sl 1.

Dart dec row 2: WS - P to first marker, sl marker, p2tog, p to 2 sts before 2nd marker, p2tog-tbl, p to the last st, sl 1 wyif.

**Work 6 rows even. Rep dart dec rows 1 & 2**.

Rep from ** to ** 4 times more. 79 (85, 91, 97) sts.

Change to 4mm needles.

WAISTBAND

Next Row: RS - [P3, p2tog] 15 (16, 18, 19) times, p4 (5, 1, 2) – 64 (69, 73, 78) sts.

[P1 row, k1 row] 3 times, then k1 row on WS for turning ridge. Stst 6 rows. Cast off.

FRONT

With 4.5mm needles, cast on 119 (125, 131, 137) sts.

Work in Main Skirt patt for 6 rows.

Short row shaping

Note: Short row turning is worked without wrapping sts, only sl 1 on the foll row.

Short row 1: RS - K99 (99, 105, 105), twice; sl 1, p to end.

Next 6 rows: Work even in patt.

Short row 2: RS - K95 (95, 101, 101), place new marker, turn; sl 1, p to end.

Next 6 rows: Work even in patt.

Short row 3: RS - K91 (91, 97, 97), turn; sl 1, p to end.

Next 6 rows: Work even in patt.

Short row 4: RS - K87 (87, 93, 93), turn; sl 1, p to end.

Next 6 rows: Work even in patt.

Short row 5: K83 (83, 89, 89) turn; sl 1, p to end.

Next 6 rows: Work even in patt.

Short rows 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13: Work as for previous short rows, working 4 sts less on each consecutiv­e short row with 6 rows even worked between each short row segment.

Work even until piece, when measured at the short (on left hand edge) measures approx 30.5cm, end with pat row 2.

FIRST PLEAT DETAIL

Next Row: RS - K to the marker, k19 more sts, join a 2nd ball of yarn and k to end. There are 2 segments worked simultaneo­usly at this point.

Next Row: WS - P to end of first segment, sl the last st; on 2nd segment, p next 18 sts, sl 1, leave the rem sts unworked (to be joined later. Work even in pat on these 2 segments only for 14 rows more.)

Decrease pleat row: RS - Sl the 19 sts of first segment to dpn and hold to front of work, then *k1 st from the dpn tog with 1 st from needle at back; rep from * until all 19 sts are worked, k to end.

Next Row: WS - P to the entire end of row, thus joining the pleat detail to the previous sts left on hold at the beg of the pleat.

Next Row: RS - Resume patt on all 100 (106, 112, 118) sts, placing a new marker at the joined segments once again. Patt even for 7.5cm.

SECOND PLEAT DETAIL

Work same as for first pleat detail. Work even on 81 (87, 93, 99) sts until front measures same as back. Change to 4mm needles.

WAISTBAND

Next Row: RS - P2tog, [p3, p2tog] 15 (16, 18, 19) times, p to end. 65 (70, 74, 79) sts.

Complete Waistband as on Back.

FABRIC TABS (MAKE 2)

With 4.5mm dpn, cast on 9 sts, work 2 rows in Main patt.

Inc row (RS) - K1, kfb, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k1.

Cont in patt, rep inc row every 4th row 5 times more. 21 sts.

Work even for 7.5cm, end with patt row 1.

Cast off in k1, p1 rib.

Sew short end of each tab in place to opening at each pleat detail. Pull through the other side. Sew down opening.

MAKING UP

Sew side seams.

Cut elastic to 58.5 (63.5, 68.5, 73.5) cm or required length. Overlap by 2.5cm and sew with thread to form a circle. Fold waistband over elastic and sew in place to the WS.
