Lacy Columns Scarf
This scarf is a simple repeating lace centre panel with a garter stitch frame. Designed by Sarah Dunster
YARN
• 5 balls of Heirloom Color Works 8ply
NEEDLES AND TOOLS
• 4.5mm knitting needles
TENSION
Not important, scarf is knit on a larger needle than normal for an 8ply yarn.
WORKING PATTERN
Cast on 39 Stitches.
BORDER
ROW 1: Knit
ROW 2: Knit
Repeat Rows 1 and 2, 3 times. This will give you 4 garter ridges.
LACE AND GARTER PANEL.
ROW 1: Knit 5*purl 1, leaving yarn at front of needle, slip 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, passed slipped stitch over, knit 4* repeat until there are 6 stitches left, purl 1 knit 5.
ROW 2 AND EVERY EVEN ROW: Knit 6, *purl 6 knit 1, repeat from * to last 5 stitches, knit 5.
ROW 3: Knit 5, *purl 1, knit 1, yarn forward, slip one stitch, knit 1 stitch, passed slipped stitch over, knit 3* repeat until there are 6 stitches left, purl 1, knit 5.
ROW 5: Knit 5, *purl 1, Knit 2, yarn forward, slip one, knit one, passed slipped stitch over, k2, repeat from * to last 6 stitches, purl 1, knit 5.
ROW 7: Knit 5,*purl 1, knit 3, yarn forward, slip one, knit one, passed slip stitch over, K1, repeat from * to last 6 stitches, purl 1, knit 5.
ROW 9: Knit 5, *purl 1, knit 4, yarn forward, slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over, repeat from * to last 6 stitches, purl 1, knit 5.
Repeat last 10 rows until scarf is at the length that you want.
BORDER
Finish scarf border by knitting 8 rows of garter stitch. Cast off.
MAKING UP
Weave in ends and block to open up the lace and stretch slightly to required length. This also helps stop the edges from curling.
