FALLSCREEK

With 40km of high-quality descending singletrack built by World Trail, near endless backcountry rides and what might be the longest descent in Australia (see our story in this issue) Falls Creek has a lot to offer. The view from the village with a post-ride refreshment cannot be beat! Dates: 17 Nov – 23 April Shuttles: Blue Dirt on weekends and every day 27/12 – 13/1 Accommodation: Lots of options from basic rooms to plush apartments. AMB’s trail pick: Flowtown – 10km of descending is hard to beat! fallscreek.com.au

MTBULLER

One of the first alpine resorts to truly get it, Mt Buller have a range of trails serving downhillers, all-mountain riders and those looking for epic days on purpose-built trails. The trails feel like they have grown organically – so if you’re looking for buffed out bike park superhighways, try somewhere else. This place is alpine, rugged and very rewarding. Dates: 3 Nov – 28 April Shuttles: All Terrain Cycles Accommodation: Plenty of bike friendly accommodation. AMB’s trail pick: It’s a toss up between Stonefly and Cornhill. bike.mtbuller.com.au

MOUNTBAWBAW

This is the closest alpine resort to a capital city, sitting barely two hours from Melbourne. The drive in is as spectacular as the views from the top, and the trails twist between old-growth forest that hasn’t burnt for nearly a century. Dates: 24 Nov – 13 April Shuttles: Yes, via Mt Baw Baw guest services Accommodation: Via their website for a wide range AMB’s trail pick: DH1 has a near cult status, but their XC trails are fun too. mtbawbaw.com.au

THREDBO

With a chairlift running all summer and three dedicated gravity trails, who could take the lead from Thredbo when it comes to offering more time descending than any other alpine resort? The range of riding is more diverse thanks to the Village trails and Thredbo Valley Trail. But if doing runs count – this is the place to go. Dates: 17 Nov – 23 April Shuttles: No need! Chairlifts run daily. Accommodation: The Thredbo Valley Hotel is central, but there are heaps of options. AMB’s trail pick: The All-Mountain trail, especially linking it to Lake Crackenback for lunch. thredbo.com.au
